Carl brought commercial kayaking to Pictured Rocks thirty-one years ago. After extensive white-water and sea kayaking, he strives to continue improving the quality of the trips we offer every year. Carl is active in many summer and winter outdoor activities. He loves the snowy weather that arrives in Munising, Michigan every year. Look for Carl at the shop and ask him anything about the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and the local town of Munising, MI.
Henry has worked for Northern Waters Adventures for ten seasons. He enjoys kayaking and camping trips for weeks at a time working in a piecewise circumnavigation of Lake Superior. He has been sea kayaking since 1990 and is an American Canoe Association Coastal Kayaking Instructor. He teaches in symposiums all around Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota and has been doing so since 2004. When not on the water Henry also loves to hike and snowshoe.
Ryan is a local adventurer. He lives in the Hiawatha National Forest and is in charge of Customer Transportation! Ryan has been with us for four seasons. He enjoys hiking, gardening and seeing all the beauty in the natural world. Ryan was a graphic artist for 20 years before moving on to various visual arts jobs and working in the music industry as a roadie.
This is Joe's twelfth season at Northern Waters Adventures. During the school year Joe teaches in Marquette, MI. Guiding, instructing, and surfing are Joe's kayaking passions. He believes that community and connectedness are essential to any on water experience. If you have any questions on local breweries, give Joe a shout!
Nancy is a lifelong resident of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She has lived in Munising for almost 30 years and worked here at Northern Waters for seven seasons. She has a background in insurance, banking, animal care and customer service. She loves to hike, ride horses, berry picking and sharing the beauty of the outdoors with others. She has an extensive knowledge of the area and other experiences to enjoy in Pictured Rocks. If you have any questions about the area, ask Nancy!
John Morand comes from Dearborn, Michigan and is a student at Northern Michigan University studying outdoor recreation. John is passionate about the outdoors, especially activities such as hiking, biking, backpacking, and especially kayaking. In the future, he hopes to continue working outdoors for the national parks system or as a wildland firefighter. This is John's first season with Northern Waters.
My name is Sherry and this is my first year as a guide! I’m a sophomore at Northern Michigan University and I'm majoring in accounting. I was born and raised downstate in Sparta, Michigan. I love the outdoors, learning, and trying new things. I enjoy hiking, slacklining, swimming, riding my bike, playing piano, hanging out with friends, and (of course) kayaking! I’m looking forward to an eventful summer of learning and growing!
This is Em's first season with Northern Waters. She is from the Metro Detroit area, and is now living in Marquette and going to NMU studying outdoor recreation, leadership management, and sustainability. She loves hiking, camping, snowboarding, and of course, kayaking!
I'm from Sundell, MI and attended Superior Central High School in Eben, after I graduated I moved to Marquette and attended NMU where I study social study education with a focus in history. I enjoy hiking and sports, I also coach football at Mid Peninsula High School in the fall.
This is Emma’s first season guiding! She is a senior attending NMU; majoring in Psychology and minoring in Outdoor Recreation. With hopes of doing outdoor therapy, Emma enjoys watercolor painting, earring making, rock climbing, tending to her plants, and kayaking. Originally from Kalamazoo Michigan, Emma is excited to be spending the summer in the UP guiding for Northern Waters Adventures.
Hailing from up the Copper Country, Dan Roblee loves Mother Superior wet and frozen. He's worked as a nurses' aide, journalist, boat crew, tour guide, waiter, cab driver, etc., and spent five years living aboard sailboats.
This is Izzy’s first season as a guide! Originally from the Detroit area, she will be graduating from Northern Michigan University this December with a degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management and a minor in Art & Design. A captain of the NMU varsity soccer team, Izzy also loves to backpack, ski, snowboard, and make pottery in her free time and is so excited to spend the summer with Northern Waters.
My name is Jesse and I was born in Lakeland, Florida, but grew up and still live in Munising, Michigan. I attended Munising High School where I played basketball, football, baseball, and run track. I enjoy hiking in my free time, along with fishing and playing basketball with friends.
