Carl brought commercial kayaking to Pictured Rocks thirty-one years ago. After extensive white-water and sea kayaking, he strives to continue improving the quality of the trips we offer every year. Carl is active in many summer and winter outdoor activities. He loves the snowy weather that arrives in Munising, Michigan every year. Look for Carl at the shop and ask him anything about the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and the local town of Munising, MI.
Henry has worked for Northern Waters Adventures for ten seasons. He enjoys kayaking and camping trips for weeks at a time working in a piecewise circumnavigation of Lake Superior. He has been sea kayaking since 1990 and is an American Canoe Association Coastal Kayaking Instructor. He teaches in symposiums all around Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota and has been doing so since 2004. When not on the water Henry also loves to hike and snowshoe.
I have 2 daughters, and 5 grandkids! I am the Northern Waters driver, so I'll get you where you want to go! I've been in the UP all my life and I live in Gwinn. I love to hunt, fish and read good books!
Ryan moved to the area from Ann Arbor in 2011. He lives in the Hiawatha National Forest and is one of our drivers this season! Ryan has been with us for two seasons now, he enjoys hiking, gardening, and seeing all the beauty in the natural world. Ryan has visited 48 states in the US. He has yet to explore North Dakota and Hawaii. Ryan has a background in visual and performing arts.
This is Joe's twelfth season at Northern Waters Adventures. During the school year Joe teaches in Marquette, MI. Guiding, instructing, and surfing are Joe's kayaking passions. He believes that community and connectedness are essential to any on water experience. If you have any questions on local breweries, give Joe a shout!
Nancy is a lifelong resident of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She has lived in Munising for the past twenty-five years and worked here at Northern Waters for five seasons. She has a background in insurance, banking, animal care and customer service. She loves to hike, ride horses, berry picking and sharing the beauty of the outdoors with others. She has an extensive knowledge of the area and other experiences to enjoy in Pictured Rocks. If you have any questions about the area, ask Nancy!
Phil is an avid outdoorsman. Originally from Duluth, Minnesota (The air conditioned city). This will be Phil's fourth season guiding the "Big Lake". Phil spends his winters working as a commercial Herring fisherman. Formally a boundary waters canoe guide and an Alaskan Drift boat captain. He is currently training to circumnavigate Lake Superior.
Paul is a true yooper and has only ever lived in Munising! He is studying advertising management at Michigan State University. He plays the guitar, ukulele, and the bongos. He is well acquainted with the area so feel free to ask him all about our beautiful pictured rocks! If you ever need music or netflix recommendations on a moments notice, he’s your guy.
My name is Gabe! I'm constantly on the look out for new places to explore and I love to learn and experience what the world has to offer. Kayaking has been a big part of my life for quite some time now, and I'm excited to be a part of Northern Waters Adventures this year. I'm currently a student and I hope to obtain a degree in journalism so I can continue to travel to interesting places and meet interesting people! I can't think of a better place to spend the summer than on the Superior lakeshore.
This is James, a wilderness steward and avid fisherman dedicated to the preservation and development of the natural world. He lives more fluently outdoors than in. James aspires to one day disappear into the Canadian wilderness as the last true mountain man, but he won't disappear on you when he's your tour guide!
Sabrina is a recent graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in Kinesiology and is starting at U of M Flint in the fall for Physical Therapy. She is in Munising for the summer and enjoys volleyball, reading, and anything to do with the water. She also has an unhealthy obsession for peanut butter, especially if it's Reese's.
This is George! George grew up in Holland MI but is originally from England. As an avid outdoorsman, he loves going backpacking with his time off. He also loves to snowboard, skateboard, rock climb and play the guitar. He is super excited to be at Northern Waters and got his inspiration from his love of the outdoors.
This is Mason's first year at Northern Waters Adventures. Mason is a student and Northern Michigan University studying secondary education. He has a love for the outdoors and loves rock climbing, hiking and backpacking in his free time. He is from the Detroit area but has lived in Virginia, California and Illinois as well.
This will be Rebecca's first year with Northern Waters Adventures! She is new to the area, but has already done a lot of exploring in the UP. She is from Kalamazoo and graduated from Western Michigan University in 2019 with a degree in Public Health. Rebecca enjoys hiking, hammocking, rollerblading, and kayaking. She is excited for this season and can't wait to share her passion for the outdoors out on the water with you!
This will be Freddie's first season with Northern Waters Adventures! He is originally from Jackson, MI. He first visited the Upper Peninsula last summer and fell in love immediately. Freddie enjoys sports, both watching and playing them, along with skateboarding, snowboarding, and kayaking. He can't wait to be on the water this season!
With deep family roots in Munising, Mark has lived here since he was a young kid. Mark has a background in Auto Body work, pet care and hospitality. Mark loves spending time with his family and many pets. He also loves spending time in nature and learning about the area's history.
Bobbi Is our newest edition to our northern waters crew. She spends her summers enjoying the outdoors and has been kayaking her whole life. In the winter she skis, snowmobiles and tries to get outside as much as possible. She is a student at northern Michigan university studying environmental biology with minors in criminal justice and ceramics. She is always excited to be out on the water and loves geology, so if you have any questions about the rock formations or geological history, ask Bobbi!
